Motor Oil Selects Concrete Canvas® for High-Speed Erosion Protection at New Splitter Facility
Motor Oil Hellas, one of Greece’s leading energy companies, is currently enhancing its Corinth refinery with a state-of-the-art C3 splitter unit. This major development marks a strategic move to increase production of polymer-grade propylene, a key component in plastics manufacturing and petrochemicals. As part of this high-stakes, high-precision project, Motor Oil made a critical decision in how to approach erosion protection at the site—opting for Concrete Canvas® (CCXM) over traditional poured or sprayed concrete solutions.
Why the switch from conventional methods? Simply put: speed, durability, and minimal operational disruption.
Concrete Canvas® is a Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) that arrives on-site as a flexible fabric embedded with dry concrete mix. Once laid and hydrated, it hardens into a durable concrete layer. For Motor Oil’s project, the choice of CCXM was driven by its ability to deliver rapid installation, long-term resilience, and low environmental impact—all without heavy machinery or complicated logistics. Compared to traditional concrete, which would have required shuttering, curing time, and larger equipment footprints, CCXM offered a streamlined, lower-risk alternative ideal for the refinery environment.
A total of 4,000 m² of Concrete Canvas® CCXM was installed over the course of just eight days by a team of six workers using only a long-reach crane and basic tools. The installation process was not only fast but also remarkably clean and efficient, with no interference to the ongoing operations of the refinery. This was a critical requirement given the complexity and sensitivity of the surrounding infrastructure.
Why Concrete Canvas® Was the Ideal Solution
Choosing CCXM gave Motor Oil several clear advantages:
Ultra-fast installation: Finished in just eight days with a small crew, perfect for tight timelines.
Exceptional durability: With a design life of up to 120 years, the solution offers long-term performance in harsh conditions.
Minimal equipment needs: Can be installed with basic tools—ideal for difficult-to-access or sensitive areas.
Low maintenance: Highly resistant to cracking, erosion, and weathering.
Environmentally friendly: Reduces material use, water consumption, and CO₂ emissions compared to traditional concrete methods.
In an industry where downtime is costly and reliability is critical, CCXM stood out as a material that could meet demanding performance standards while also accelerating construction timelines.

In summary, Motor Oil’s use of Concrete Canvas® for erosion protection at its new splitter facility is a powerful example of how modern infrastructure projects can benefit from smart material choices. The combination of speed, safety, and sustainability made CCXM the obvious choice—setting a new benchmark for refinery construction in the region.
